Did You Know? Who was the first man in space? Believe it or not, it was not an astronaut. It was test pilot Joe Kittinger. In 1960, he was assigned to discover whether an astronaut could survive an aborted mission, even 20 miles (32km) above the Earth. Kittinger rose to 102,800 ft(31,330km) by balloon and then jumped out. He was so high that initially he felt no wind resistance. He fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 614 mph (988 km/h), before opening his parachute at 18,000 ft (5,500m). (A giant leap for mankind)
