Karen was introduced to quilting by our daughter Melanie 7 or 8 years ago. She loves it. So we decided to have one of our spare bedrooms converted to accomodate Karen's sewing needs. She is very, very good at what she creates. Quilts originally started as leftover rags being sewn together to make blankets. It evolved from that to what we see today. During the Civil War of 1860-1865 certain types of quilts were hung on wash lines to let the "Underground Railroad" aid the fleeing African-American slaves by allowing them to know if passage was safe or not. Different type of quilts have different names such as Star, Log Cabin, Flying Geese, etc, etc.
Question: Why did the Amish not use patterned fabrics in their quilts? Answer: Pattern fabrics were looked upon as being too worldly.
Trivia: Quilted material was used as protective armour during the Crusades. It was even used on their steeds in battle.
